Religion and Science as Two Different Areas of the Human Psyche

The relationship between religion and science is one of the most discussed issues in international academic and public discussions in the second half of the 20th and early 21st centuries. Its poignancy and polemical nature are due to the existence of at least two opposing positions that illustrate ideological contradictions in any society. According to one of them, between religion and science throughout history, there has been an insurmountable conflict for the right to form a picture of the world:

  • Religion and science belong to different areas of the human psyche. Science is born out of the human need for knowledge.
  • Religion is born out of man's need for hope. The basis of the scientific method is doubt. Religion is based on faith.
  • Physiologically, in the structure of the human brain, two hemispheres are localized - sensual and rational.
  • Both logic and faith are important for human life. Both supports are required. In the social structure, the first is embodied in science, the second - is in religion.
  • It is unethical for science to approach religion with criticism based on scientific arguments, just as religion should not take up the discussion of the laws of the material world.

The Conflict of Science and Religion: A View of a Researcher

Scientists and religious figures often found themselves on opposite sides of the barricades, but it would be wrong to say that the conflict between science and religion is inevitable. In any case, examples of scientists who are religious people are numerous enough not to be considered random episodes. This, in turn, makes it inevitable within the framework of religious studies to address the topic of science and religion. The interviewers expressed widely varying opinions about the nature of the relationship between science and religion and whether the relationship is harmonious or contradictory. Some believe that science and Islam are generally compatible, pointing out that they contains many elements of science and that Islam and science often try to describe similar things.
